The first 3D King of Fighters, Maximum Impact is a good example of this, a game that met with a lot of hostility from KOF fans, not least of which because of its poor balance and an engine that seemed to still have its heart firmly in 2D territory, whilst still having an emphasis on combos.
Its sequel King of Fighters Maximum Impact 2 feels much the same, essentially a 2D fighter in 3D clothes in both its looks and its game play. The engine is more than adequate but can’t measure up to the best 3D fighting engines, such as Tekken and Dead or Alive. It all looks very nice too, but the animation is rather rigid and much of the charm that it has in 2D has been lost in its translation to the third dimension.

The new judgement mechanic prevents the overpowered combos that were possible in the original game, cutting down the damage of particular chained moves, resulting in far more balanced fights.
The character roster is also far better poised. Despite being named 'King of Fighters 2006' this a actually a sequel to King of Fighters: Maximum Impact. Everyone from the previous game is in this game, plus some characters from the 2D games, such as Geese and Takuma, and some totally new characters, such Ninon and Luise (who is my favorite character in this game, by the way) Remember Hyena (the one who told who you're fighting next) from the last game? They've improved from the last game. They brought in some new features such as counter, where you can counter moves. There's also the Mission mode where you fight someone under certain requirements or even destroying a car or a tank. I find that to be kind of fun. SNK fighting games are known to have very hard bosses, but the boss in this game (Jivatma) isn't too hard at all. He's kind of hard, but nothing like other SNK bosses. He's still a little harder than Duke from the original Maximum Impact though.

The graphics are good, but not quite as good as some other fighting games like Dead or Alive or Tekken. They are probably on par with Virtua Fighter's graphics. So, overall, this is a great fighting game and almost as good as the Tekken games. If you're looking for a 3D fighting game for your PS2 besides Tekken or Soul Calibur, you should try this.
